FUT is done by stripping a linear portion of skin from the donor scalp area which might leave behind a strip scar and healing time will be more prolonged. The grafts or hairs are then separated by assistants under microscope by dissecting the skin, but again it depends upon the experience of assistants. Sometimes hair roots can get cut or transected which might lead to loss of hairs. FUT is more deep and invasive and chances of numbness, paraesthesias or pain is not uncommon.
FUE is done by making small micro-holes in the donor area and taking the grafts or follicular units out one by one. Though it’s a blind procedure and depends upon the surgeon and team to extract the grafts properly without damaging the grafts because many times hair roots are deep, curly or fat is more and makes the process difficult. Downtime is very less in FUE and donor area heals up with very minimal scarring unlike FUT which might end up in a big permanent scar. FUE is very minimally invasive procedure and added advantage over FUT is that FUE can be used to extract hairs from non-scalp sources like beard and body etc.
BOTH FUT and FUE have their own share of advantages and disadvantages but primarily depends upon the performing Surgeon and team, their expertise, instrumentation etc.We perform NEO-FOLLICLE TRANSPLANT (NFT) which is an advanced FUE technique, in the sense for extraction we use 0.7 mm sharp titanium tipped punches to avoid donor area scarring and transection of hairs and for implantation we use Implanting devices by which we can give proper depth, direction and adequate density in the recipient area without causing scarring and shock loss.
